Background of the study
Maintaining linguistic heritage is a complex task, particularly for languages that face pressure from dominant global languages. In Kano, the Hausa language, with its rich cultural history, confronts numerous challenges in the wake of modernizing influences and policy shifts. Language policies intended to protect and promote Hausa heritage are met with obstacles ranging from insufficient funding to bureaucratic inefficiencies (Muhammed, 2023). The interplay between cultural identity and language policy is at the heart of this study, which examines how contemporary policy measures have attempted to safeguard Hausa traditions and linguistic practices. The investigation situates the Hausa language within historical and sociopolitical contexts, reflecting on both the successes of preservation initiatives and the persistent challenges arising from globalization and internal policy conflicts (Aminu, 2024). By analyzing policy documents, educational practices, and community responses, the study provides a comprehensive overview of the factors that influence the maintenance of Hausa language heritage. It underscores the importance of coordinated policy efforts that involve educators, cultural custodians, and policymakers in ensuring that Hausa continues to thrive amidst modern challenges (Muhammed, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite various policy measures aimed at preserving Hausa language heritage in Kano, significant challenges persist. Inconsistencies in policy implementation, limited resource allocation, and conflicting interests among stakeholders have impeded the effectiveness of preservation initiatives (Aminu, 2024). These challenges result in the gradual erosion of traditional linguistic practices and cultural identity, as modern influences overshadow indigenous values (Muhammed, 2023). Furthermore, inadequate monitoring and evaluation mechanisms have made it difficult to gauge the success of existing policies, leading to a gap between policy objectives and tangible outcomes. This study seeks to critically assess these challenges and identify actionable strategies to reinforce policy measures that effectively maintain Hausa language heritage in Kano.
